The Special Counsel, John Durham has revealed that the Hillary Clinton campaign paid a chain of operatives to intercept Internet communications from Donald Trump, personally, his campaign, and as President in the White House. The scope of this illegality is mind boggling. This was not a dark-ops sanctioned by the intelligence community. Even if that were the case, it would still be legally dubious given the context and the information later ended up in that process. Hillary Clinton was conducting a political campaign before the election. After the election, these acts constitute official espionage, not just a campaign violation. As Donald Trump has just pointed out, “This is a scandal far greater in scope and magnitude than Watergate and those who were involved in and knew about this spying operation should be subject to criminal prosecution”. It’s time to revisit Watergate.
In the infamous event known as Watergate, an event that occurred well before a lot of people today were born, a group of Richard Nixon’s team conspired and then broke into the DNC office at the Watergate Building in Washington DC to steal campaign sensitive information. They were caught and prosecuted. Some served time. More notably, it eventually resulted in the resignation of Richard Nixon; not just from the break-in, which was a tactically insignificant event, but more so from the coverup initiated by Nixon after the fact. Watergate totally consumed the country for years, before, during and after the trials. The levels of hate and derision against Nixon and to some extent, Republicans in general, was off the charts, similar to the discord we’re experiencing now. A whole generation of liberal activists were generated from the Watergate/Nixon turmoil, an extension of the anti-Vietnam war activism that had been taken up for the 6-8 years prior. In an ultimate twist of irony, Hillary Clinton worked on the Watergate investigative inquiry, fresh out of college.
Why was Watergate such a big deal in the 70s and will this present generation grasp the ramifications now? Trump is absolutely correct in his assessment that it should result in criminal prosecution. The whole body of election law is intended to keep us from sinking to the level of corrupt tin-horn dictatorships that can rig their own governance in perpetuity and yet this is precisely what liberal icon – Clinton attempted. Even more so, there is already a body of evidence showing that Clinton was fully aided and abetted by the Obama administration, directly implicating the even more revered liberal – icon, Barack Obama, and the greatly inept Vice President at that time, Joe Biden. This axis, Clinton/Obama/Biden is and was far more corrupt than the corrupt Richard Nixon, the scandal of which stained a whole generation of politicians. What are we going to do about it?
I can’t predict how effectively the Durham investigation will prosecute the finding which are even now, only partially disclosed with much more to come but I’m hopeful given the methodical pace they are moving. But we live in a different time now. There is little indication that the institution known as Democrats – including rank and file Democrats, whether they have anywhere near the same regard for law that they feigned back in the 70’s. I suspect that we’ll hear some variations on ‘well, things are different now’ and ‘the ends justify the means’ especially as they attempt to justify away their moral-less stance contrasted against a Donald Trump they regard as the epitome of ‘evil’, a stance made all the more desperate by his popularity with the working class of this country, a people they despise.
So liberal progressive baby-boomer warriors, what say you of your icons now that they’ve far eclipsed the boogeyman of your youth, Richard Nixon? Will you use this as a teachable moment to inform your radical young peers clamoring for socialism? What do you think as it slowly dawns on you in the public square, that your icons, Clinton, Obama, Biden, were the real fascist that you thought you were fighting against?
