Shalom in danger
For several years, Israel has not been a hot topic in my news focus though it once was. My life history has been punctuated by the major events of Israel. I remember riding in the family car as a boy as my Dad tried to explain the significance of the Six-Day War as it was occurring. I remember spending a random day in Washington DC on September 13, 1993 as huge security details passed by because of the signing of the Oslo Accords by Rabin of Israel and Abbas of the PLO. I kept up on the news. Since then, in the Middle East and Central Asia, we’ve had our hands full with Desert Storm, the Iraqi war, the Arab Spring, Libya, Afghanistan, Syria and other constant struggles. I’ve been somewhat aware of Obama’s tense relationship with Netanyahu, watching our country’s historic position with Israel erode as Obama attempted to spread his brand of globalism into the Middle East.
In the news this week, the United States abandoned its historic disposition toward Israel by abstaining from a vote on United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334. To get a concise reading on why this is regarded as an affront, I recommend the article by Ruth R. Wisse. It goes beyond just making a couple summery statements but provides succinct underlying reasoning without delving into a long history lesson.
Israel is and will remain as the sole strategic anchor of US interests in the Middle East. If they were to be overrun, we could kiss goodbye to any stability on the whole continent and that includes Europe now that it’s citizenry has such as large representation from the Middle East. The peace of Israel is our peace and something historic just happened to threaten that equation.
