I and I’m sure, some others, noticed a sign showing up in social media this past week. It’s a trending image of an upside-down American flag. The first instance I saw this, an explanation was close at hand, explaining that this was not a sign of dis-respect, but rather of distress in a military campaign. If a unit is besieged and needs urgent assistance or else perish, the flag is hung upside down. I don’t know if it’s an official signal or perhaps an antiquated one since combat personnel are now more likely to identify themselves with something like concealed digital transponders, but the meaning is clear; a growing cadre of conservatives are hoisting the inverted flag, coming to the realization that maybe the United States is passing a point of irretrievable.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, ‘MTG’ as she is now known, caused a major related stir this week by declaring that the United States needed a national divorce. By saying so, she was referencing the countless voices feeling that the divide between left and right, woke and conservative, has become unreconcilable. She was/is advocating some kind of break-up of the United States. I and a lot of other conservatives would not go that far and would instead, suggest a movement toward significantly greater federalism, but the point she’s making isn’t without conceptual merit. It has its polar opposite constituency on the left as well. That type of act is already in motion in Eastern Oregon where most counties in that end of the state have voted to petition to become part of Idaho instead and it is solely over the values of left vs. right, woke vs. conservative. That movement is not theory, it’s real news.
Another voice also spoke up this week. Scott Adams of ‘Dilbert’ cartoon fame declared that whites should get as far away from blacks as possible to save themselves; I believe he said this in response to observing rapidly snowballing instances of black on white hate crime violence that seems to be transcending into a social movement. This is along with broader full societal collapse in some major cities and strongholds of woke ideology. The shrieks of ‘racist’ are loud and predictable but critics should not dare to deny a fundamental right of association. Increasingly, the feelings are mutual to the point that there’s now a strong woke neo-segregationist movement. Segregation of blacks and exclusion of whites are now openly demanded among woke advocates, particularly in academic settings. It’s becoming unclear whether the left even believes in racial integration anymore. It’s at best bi-polar; they want it if it involves the government forcing economic advantages that they could not obtain via merit but otherwise are more interested in segregation, particularly if they perceive some underlying punishment for any non-blacks involved. Scott Adam’s warning doesn’t take into account the black populations that want to remain integrated, and it doesn’t direct enough guilt on the white woke intelligentsia that has openly promoted the social violence he condemns and whom are now calling him racist. If acting on Adam’s warning defiles someone else’s fantasies of racial harmony or more likely, their abstract rhetoric devoid of personal responsibility, it’s immaterial. They must protect themselves and their family, particularly if they live in a crumbling urban Democrat stronghold.
There will be no singular trumpet call to notify conservatives that the union of the United States is terminal beyond repair. It’s on everyone’s lips, it’s overwhelmingly reflected in polling that shows among conservatives and liberals alike that there are deep problems that are not being addressed. Most of us go on living and working, hoping – perhaps without intelligent justification – that it will all somehow work out, that we can just hold together just long enough until another election with some hope of turning things around. But there are no guarantees. Everyone is hedging. The rich ready their enclave out west. Huge numbers arm up as best as they can. Others eat, drink, do merry, and check out, while others game the coming ruin to position themselves in the new economy of squandered pillaged wealth, identity hustlers, hyper-scarcity for the average man, government controls and loss of freedoms for all.
The flag is upside down for good reason.
