We’re now about a week into the news cycle wherein a draft of the decision that would undo Roe v Wade was leaked. This spawned a separate news event when the conservative Supreme Court Justices were doxed, and yet further layers of news events as demonstrators showed up at the conservative justice’s homes and that the Biden administration would not condemn the leak, the doxing or the demonstrations. Through all of this, I come away with the sense that historic violations against the judiciary are occurring and because the Democrat leftist have already established the precedent that would make this seem like just another day of work for them, there’s nothing that conservatives are doing or saying that comes close to an adequate response.
It’s all too easy to yawn and click through to the next news story, even as a conservative. The left would claim that their protests are symmetrical, they are not. The violations against the court should be viewed as a consolidated whole. The document was leaked to spur the exact reactions that have transpired. It’s a far more materialized assault on the work a branch of government than what was claimed of the January 6th protest/riot.
What does this mean and what should be called out? I’ll say what a lot of people are thinking but no one is verbalizing. A few on the ‘far-fringe’ left have mused of killing Supreme Court justices. Maybe it’s just their fantasy, maybe it’s not, maybe it’s something more, but what they understand and no one wants to face is that if they killed just one or two justices, they understand that Joe Biden, both the worst and the most radicalized president in US history, still has over two years to fill vacancies on the court and if those vacancies are filled with his certain extremist picks, the court is surely radicalized for an entire generation. What happens if certain elements on the left are willing to accept the outrage that would occur, including faux outrage even amongst their peers, for them to get what they see as their greater good, permanently radicalizing the court? There is no mechanism whatsoever in law that would punish the left for assassinating a Supreme Court justice in such a way that they would be denied the ability to fill that vacancy under Joe Biden for the next two years. The left could claim how awful it is that anyone would do that, then ecstatically get on with their replacements.
The fact that neither the Democrats in Congress nor the President has disavowed first the leak and then the doxing and the unethical protests at the private homes of conservative Supreme Court justices indicate upfront where they’re true sympathies lay, first in an extreme breach of judicial and public ethics. If anyone thinks this is not indicative of their sympathies in the case of an assassination, you’re fooling yourselves. The only logical mechanism that would deter them is the fear of starting a civil war because every other conceptual bridge has already been crossed. When you give permission for a mob to directly intimidate Supreme Court justices, you’ve also tacitly countenanced for some out-of-control member of your own fringe to also murder them.
Until conservative leaders are willing to openly speak this ugly warning, the justices are in far greater danger, and so are we all.
