Just wondering out-loud. We’re within days of Trump and the official start to the revolutions. Yes, plural, Trump and the opposition. Whatever shreds of goodwill occurred in the immediate aftermath of the election have long since gone away and we’re left even more divided than the contentious days of Obama. The rhetoric is already off the charts. Its like a neighborhood ball game that always had certain rules, traditional game rules plus a few agreed upon exceptions that were always honored and one day you show up and there will be no rules. Anything is fair game including bodily injury. There were a few games in my youth that actually worked out that way.
This is what you will see as Trump begins his presidency: While people on the left have stated their fear of intimidation and physical injury, so far, it’s the left that is perpetrating and promising violence. From the disabled young man in Chicago that was held and tortured for five hours while his antagonist attributed him with Trump sympathies, to the protestors promising violence and damage at the inauguration balls, to those who are making death threats to would-be-performers, how is this any different than the Islamic State? My fear is that this is just the precursor and the warm up.
I’ll state it here: another civil war begins in earnest on January 20, 2017. This will be a war that starts in fog. There will be bodily injury, perhaps more, but that is not the immediately feature of the war. What is significant is this: A small but notable segment of this country will have disassociated itself from the constitutional authority of federally sanctioned elections and instituted government. This defines civil war. This is already occurring. While it is presently rhetoric, it will be the tit for tat escalation of subversions in the war-fog that will mark a permanent change for the United States.
I personally dislike Trump as much as anyone but I have respect for the office that he holds and I have some respect for some of the people has appointed. I happen to agree with some of his agenda though certainly not all. As flakey as Trump is, as long as he is working within the constitution of the United States, all others outside of that shell are the enemies. They may protest, vote, run for office, and they have free speech, but they don’t have the right to void constitutional America. If Trump as well departs from that path, congress and the judiciary are obligated to intervene. Hopefully they will, as they should have when Obama started to take on extra-executive powers.
Friday, January 20, 2017, I hope for a peaceful transition. I hope for a backing down of the rhetoric that exceeds lawful protest by signaling insurrection. If we are going to keep our national union intact, everyone is going to have to work for it. Hopefully no one will have to bleed for it again.
