I’ve heard all the uproar about Stephan Colbert being cut from the CBS lineup. While on the surface, it seems he’s trying to take it all in with bitter equanimity, I suspect underneath he’s seething. For his followers, it’s all out on their sleeves. While about twenty people showed up for a protest, his friends in high places are using their podiums of fame to denounce CBS, the suits looking to complete a buyout, and ultimately puppet master Trump who insidiously has engineered the whole affair. Is there anything that Trump cannot revolutionize nowadays? Insert a little LOL just now… The whole thing comes down to money. CBS is tired of losing $40 million a year, just on Colbert. What’s $40 million for the cause? Stephen Colbert is essential to the success of the cause. Without him having the platform, Trump will be able to revolutionize even more, I guess. Personally, I’m a bit mystified as to how and why Colbert became such an essential spokes-human. He landed in Letterman’s seat and Letterman told jokes, humor, you know. Now the seat is where other essential far lefties can come talk and be watched by dozens of other lefties. That doesn’t tell me why Colbert is so essential. Nevertheless, I have some thoughts and ideas about how to stave off this tragedy. I’m really surprised that no one has even broached this question and answer in everything I’ve read to date about it. The only narrative out there is that CBS pulls the plug and Colbert collapses; and its essential that only CBS has the right and the duty to lose $40 million a year for the Colbert cause. Classic case of ‘Other People’s Money’. But it doesn’t have to be that way. I have two solutions. One is that someone else volunteers to lose $40 million a year for the cause. Lefties seem to be comprised of many well to do famous stars and starlets that are passionate about Colbert. They’re the ones out there right now cursing CBS, the execs, the exec’s mothers etc. They’re also collectively very rich. We’re talking yachts, houses in the Hamptons and so forth. It would only take 40 of his best lefty friends to commit to losing $1 million a year together and Colbert’s show would be saved. Problem solved. When you put it that way, it doesn’t seem like such a lost cause. Why would they not all do that if the cause is so important to them? But what I would really like to see is for Stephen Colbert to take on the lion’s share of that $40 million himself; after all, there is no bigger believer in the cause than Colbert himself. I’m not sure what he makes but a big chunk of that $40 million could come straight out of foregoing his salary. That would be the level of dedication I’d expect to see from someone so fervent for the cause. You might be thinking to yourself, if you’re a lefty, ‘that’s easy for you to say bastard!’ Well guess what, I’ve never made a dime off Northeast Reader and I’ve paid every dime of its expenses. I guess that makes me more committed to my cause than Stephen Colbert is to his.
