Today is the tenth birthday or anniversary of Northeast Reader. This post is purely to mark the interval. Most of what I would say on this occasion is and was captured in the November 2024 updated text of the ‘About’ section so I won’t belabor those points. When I started, I did not have any specific expectation of lasting ten years but I’m not surprised and I feel pretty confident that I’ll see at least another ten years here if not more. I did have some vague hope of being ‘discovered’ and admitted to the constellation of the known, lauded and respected conservative commentariat but along the way, I decided that the juice would not be worth the squeeze to be diverted by some vague notion of fame. My obligation is only to myself and I will largely or wholly keep it that way. To the extent that the Internet remains free and we live under a constitutional republic that guarantees first amendment rights, the entirety of my writing remains up and public, the good, the bad, the ugly; no apologies and I explain why and any caveats in my ‘About’. In a world saturated by social media in which billions of people can slap a meme, a slogan, or a thoughtless rant online and defend it with just more endless inuendo, I believe I fill a void of context, continuity, and consistent convictions. Today is a milestone that I am happy for and proud to be still publishing after these ten years.
