I’m going to be redundant, but I think it’s warranted. Ostensibly, the topic is Ukraine, which I’ve written on several times in the past month, but really the topic is about thinking for yourself, even as a conservative. Most conservatives would already rightly claim to think for themselves at least when compared to the massive monolith of disinformation coming from the major regime media. I do not believe that most conservatives automatically embrace conspiracy theories though certain factions do, in fact some fall for them hard. An irony here is that regarding the war in Ukraine, these conspiracy theories may indeed be made up substantially of facts or more accurately, a collection of factors that have some basis in truth but are otherwise strung together in a way to support an erroneous alternative narrative.
I’ll call out Revolver News on this one because it’s where I see the most concerted effort to string together an alternate story on Ukraine, following in the foot path of Carlson Tucker’s commentary. I have my own theories of the correct balance. As I explained in the past, Revolver, I believe has some of the best and the worst in conservative media. For a month now, I’ve watched them complain a steady stream of grievances over Ukraine and Zelensky, to the point that they come right about to the point of endorsing Putin’s position that Ukraine represents an existential threat to Russia, and furthermore, Zelensky and Ukraine being the messiah of globalism (Global American Empire) on behalf of the west. In this mix, Putin almost represents true conservatism, (think Tsarist), and good old-fashioned values. How absurd! I wish I could say that I’m exaggerating but it goes down like this; no one is minding the store. If you throw up a dozen articles of unrelated stories that just happen to form a narrative, well, you end up owning it even if you think you don’t entirely own it, and it’s not like there’s much diversity to the thread.
Revolver isn’t the only source taking the angle and I’m happy to say that the outlet isn’t in the majority opinion even in conservative media. As for helping or hurting Ukraine’s prospects, none of it matters. We’re all just armchair warriors while the people of Ukraine sit in cold basements tonight, some without food, water and medicine, and missiles dropping around them. What’s so infuriating though about the conservative wack-jobs on this issue is the absolute non-realization of who invaded who. One gets the impression that a certain party of individuals would be quite happy to see Ukraine’s cities leveled and their population, men women and children dispensed with in a brutal genocide. Guess what: until I see some one of that faction make an explicit admission otherwise, I have to go with that assessment.
I don’t expect Revolver to hear my indictment, nor anyone that matters enough to change it, but my real object here is to use this case study to point out that mindlessly listening to others and experts that would conform your brain to their way of thinking works both ways. It ain’t just the progressive, globalist, perverts and anarchists trying to own every mind in sight. Put on your own thinking cap and don’t sell out to any one source on anything.
